It was the second time we took part at Rockome Gardens Pow wow. The first time was way back in 1995. The people in charge was a guy named Jack and an Apache woman. There were many dancers then and they belong to Kaskaskia Dance Group. They even have a bus with their name on it. I can't remember if they are also connected with the Rainbow Dancers. Tom and I shared a 10 ft. X 10 ft. booth with our nephew Sammy Joe. All of Sam's 3 boys were with us and they were very young then. We set up our sleeping tent and dining tent with screen. There were many people and I can't find my way around the many RVs and tents. We set up in the field far away from the pow wow circle. I was selling odds and ends and Navajo skirts I made. We bought buttons to use for meals for the 3-day pow wow.
That Saturday afternoon, I went to the Amish furniture store. After a few minutes, rain poured relentlessly non-stop. Soon all the grounds were covered with water knee-deep. I was stranded. I saw Sam splashing through the water and swimming. It flooded. Luckily, we were able to retrieve our vehicle and drove to a nearby hotel. The next morning, we found our tents ruined with night crawlers all around.
Coming back, the place is still the same - nothing changed just the ownership. Saturday was another stormy day with brisk wind. The old big tent kept losing its legs due to the high wind.
Rockome Gardens is now owned by a local farmer and a business partner. The pow wow event was cancelled for so many years and the new owners are trying to have the pow wow back. Joel, who's now in charge of the pow wow is such a nice and accommodating man that in spite of the inclement weather, we enjoyed coming back to Rockome Gardens.
